"Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival" (2026) Wants to Open The Box Again…

Written by: Sam Santiago

For anyone unfamiliar with the "Hellraiser" universe or the work of Saber Interactive, this is not your typical horror game. At least, that is the claim.

"Clive Barkers Hellraiser: Revival" is a single‑player, first‑person survival horror game that emphasizes psychological terror, grotesque imagery, and some questionable choices that make our morals take a back seat. The developers insist it is not about cheap jump scares. It is meant to immerse players in the kind of intimate, unsettling horror the franchise is known for. On paper, it could be a rare return to form for modern horror gaming, but fans have heard big promises before. We are very optimistic as the game is being labeled "CLIVE BARKER'S HELLRAISER..." that alone has us all a tingle because Barker doesn't play games (get it) when it comes to his Hell Priest and his creations but let's be honest, when it comes to film franchises transitioning to video games, not everyone will be a happy camper about the result. Still, at least we get a continuation of a world we enjoy filled with pain and suffering, ya know, the usual.

Opening the Box

Players assume the role of Aidan, a man who solves the cursed Genesis Configuration puzzle box to rescue his girlfriend, Sunny, from the Labyrinth, the extradimensional nightmare ruled by the Cenobites. Pinhead will return, voiced by Doug Bradley, whose calm, surgical menace defined the character for decades. This is a big deal, as Bradley hasn't been associated with the "Hellraiser" franchise for some time. The game reportedly combines combat, stealth, puzzles, and resource management, with a focus on exploring consequences, temptation, and the darker sides of human desire.

Even with all these great aspects, we have a few questions/concerns. Pinhead is not a traditional villain. He is a Cenobite, an entity existing beyond human morality. That concept was revisited in the 2022 "Hellraiser" reboot on Hulu, where the Hell Priest was portrayed as female. While the reinterpretation was conceptually interesting and, truthfully, more accurate to Barker's original design from the novella "Hellbound Heart," it lacked the same shock and authority as Bradley’s original performance. For many fans, Doug Bradley is still Pinhead, or at least the first image that comes to mind when someone says the name and for good reason.

Fans React

We like to see what everyone is saying because, like them, we're fans, and Reddit discussions about "Hellraiser: Revival" reveal a mix of excitement and skepticism. On r/hellraiserthegame, users celebrated the announcement that the game received a Mature ESRB rating without removing any content, noting that preserving the graphic and adult elements is essential to maintaining the franchise’s integrity.

On r/HorrorGaming, fans expressed enthusiasm for a single‑player horror experience, with multiple posts about pre-ordering and anticipation for a faithful adaptation. At the same time, some users voiced concern that the game could fall short if it relies on superficial horror rather than the philosophical and psychological core of the original. Others are speculating about how the Labyrinth will be structured, whether old Cenobites or new ones will appear, and whether the game will honor Clive Barker’s themes of desire, pain, and consequence. See what we mean about how people can't seem to be happy? These are all valid concerns, and we are as eager as anybody to be pleasantly surprised when playing.

Some Redditors have also raised concerns about potential content limitations on consoles, warning that corporate restrictions could dilute the game’s intensity. We see these concerns more in international markets than here in the U.S., but time will tell.

Saber Interactive is really bringing their A game for this release. Over on the official website, you can pre-order the game with a variety of add-on items or collectibles. Check out the image below for what we mean.

The Labyrinth Problem

Early descriptions of gameplay suggest a strong focus on navigating the Labyrinth itself. That is promising, but it is also risky. The Labyrinth only works when it feels unknowable, disorienting, and dangerous. If it is reduced to a simple dungeon crawl, the Cenobites become mere enemies rather than judges, and the puzzle box becomes a prop instead of a philosophical challenge. We could see this turn into a really bad Golden Axe-style 3D game if the dungeon aspect is used far too much. If you're continuously walking down long ass hallways and seeing nothing or doing nothing but just walking, we're gonna need some fast travel or something. Hell is huge!

Should Fans Be Excited?

At the moment, "Hellraiser: Revival" exists between anticipation and doubt. Doug Bradley is back. The game claims to focus on psychological horror, and with the latest developer update from Saber that IGN was able to get, we have very high hopes as well as expectations for Hellraiser: Revival.

Yet the franchise has lost its identity before. Too many sequels have treated Cenobites as generic villains instead of what they were always meant to be. If Saber Interactive understands this, the game could finally deliver an interactive Hellraiser experience worthy of its source material. If not, it may serve as a cautionary reminder of what happens when the box is opened without understanding what lies inside.

We shall wait and see...

("Hellraiser: Revival" does not have an official hard release date yet. The developer Saber Interactive and publisher have confirmed the game is scheduled for release sometime in 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, but no specific day or month has been publicly announced.)
