The newest Resident Evil game, Requiem, arrives on February 27. Capcom has just dropped a live-action trailer that plays more like a short horror film than a teaser. It is chaotic, tense, and completely mind-blowing.

Maika Monroe, known for "Longlegs" and "It Follows", stars as an unnamed mother doing everything she can to protect her daughter during the original Raccoon City T-Virus outbreak in the 1990s. The set is a riot of zombies, smoke machines, police officers, and extras in full undead makeup. “It really felt like chaos,” Monroe told Entertainment Weekly. “It was just wild. But in a good way.”

The trailer tracks the mother and daughter as they evade the city’s monsters. A flash-forward reveals a tragic fate that lingers long after the last shot. “What I loved about it was that it had a lot of heart,” Monroe said. “It is heartbreaking, but in a way that makes the story feel alive. It is a fresh take on how to bring a video game to life.”

Monroe’s character does not appear in the game itself. Players will instead follow the return of fan-favorite Raccoon City police officer Leon S. Kennedy.

The story begins with a body discovered at an abandoned hotel in the Midwest, the latest in a string of strange deaths across the country. FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft is sent to investigate, returning to the hotel where her mother was murdered eight years earlier. When word arrives that a police officer has gone missing on site, Leon S. Kennedy is also dispatched.

Grace and Leon’s paths intersect as they confront their pasts and unravel the mystery behind the Raccoon City Incident. The horrors of their memories loom large, leaving one question at the center: will they survive, or will this be a requiem for the dead?
