Netflix has a new true crime obsession on its hands, and it is not taking long for viewers around the world to find it.

The British miniseries The Witness, released on June 4, has already surged to the top of Netflix charts in multiple countries, pulling in millions of views within days of release. On the surface, it presents itself as a restrained three-episode drama based on real events; underneath that calm exterior is a story rooted in one of London’s most haunting crimes.

The series follows André Hanscombe and his young son Alex in the aftermath of the 1992 murder of Rachel Nickell in London. Rachel, André’s partner and Alex’s mother, was killed in a public attack that would later become one of the most infamous cases in modern British criminal history.

At just two years old, Alex became the only witness to his mother’s murder.

From there, the series shifts away from the crime itself and instead focuses on what came after. The slow collapse and attempted rebuilding of a life that was permanently fractured in a single moment. André’s struggle as a single father. The suffocating pressure of media attention. The long shadow cast by a police investigation that refused to fade.

The series is adapted from Alex Hanscombe’s memoir Letting Go, with both Alex and André serving as consultants during production to ensure the story reflects their lived experience.

In a statement to Netflix, the two reflected on the years following Rachel’s death, describing their journey as one shaped by loss, endurance, and faith.

“Our life was a struggle,” they said. “Our journey was guided by God’s grace and the promise that we would continue together, and we feel incredibly blessed to be able to share our story in this way.”

The series was created and written by Rob Williams and directed by Alex Winckler. Jordan Bolger portrays André Hanscombe, while Max Fincham and Jahsaiah Williams portray Alex at different stages of his life.

Both actors reportedly spent time with the real André and Alex during production in an effort to better understand the emotional weight behind the story.

“They cared about getting it right,” Alex said. “It was a privilege that they wanted to represent us honestly.”

Alongside the miniseries, Netflix also released a companion documentary, The Murder of Rachel Nickell, revisiting the case in greater detail. It includes interviews with investigators, family members, and those connected to the case, while also examining the controversial early investigation that initially focused on the wrong suspect before later advances helped identify the real killer.

Despite its quiet release, The Witness has quickly become one of Netflix’s most talked about true crime titles of the year. Critics have awarded it strong reviews, with a rare perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes based on early coverage.

With only three episodes, it does not stretch its story. It simply leaves viewers sitting with it.

And for many, that is exactly what makes it difficult to forget.
