Some may be wondering why a horror site would dive headfirst into fantasy television, but wherever there’s blood, and lots of it, violence, and a bit of nudity to boot, we’ll be watching. So of course House of the Dragon has firmly landed on our radar, especially now that HBO has unleashed the final trailer for Season 3, teasing what looks to be the most brutal chapter yet in the blood soaked civil war tearing Westeros apart.

The final trailer for House of the Dragon Season 3 has officially arrived, and if you thought the Dance of the Dragons had already spilled enough blood, think again. HBO’s latest footage teases massive destruction, political betrayal, dragonfire raining from the skies, and what appears to be one of the most savage battles ever attempted in the Game of Thrones universe. We're stoked.

As dragons descend upon King’s Landing, Rhaenyra Targaryen rises as the city’s new ruler, though anyone familiar with Westeros knows the Iron Throne never comes without a mountain of corpses attached. Team Green continues plotting from the shadows, while tensions between Rhaenyra and Alicent appear ready to finally explode beyond repair, especially when Rhaenyra demands Aegon be brought before her.

But for many fans, the true centerpiece of the trailer is the long-awaited Battle of the Gullet, a watery massacre drenched in blood, fire, and chaos that already looks destined to become one of the defining moments of the entire series.

The battle was originally intended for Season 2 before being delayed due to complications caused by the 2023 Hollywood strikes, but according to showrunner Ryan Condal, waiting was the only way to do it properly.

"To try to tell this story without doing the Gullet would be trying to film Lord of the Rings without doing the Battle of Helm's Deep," House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal recently told Entertainment Weekly. "If we were gonna do it, we had to do it right. And that meant dragons and ships and multiple theaters of conflict."

The scale of Season 3 clearly left an impression on star Emma D’Arcy as well.

"There was a degree of thrill at what was on the page this season because the show's gotten bigger, not just in terms of its dramatic scale, but actually in terms of its ambition. It's very exciting when that happens. It felt to me that the bar had been raised — and I'm a competitive person, so I wanted to meet that."

D’Arcy also teased just how quickly the season descends into all out war.

"The series this time around starts at 60 miles an hour," D'Arcy continued. "We're finally watching a war that has been building for two seasons. I'm so impressed by Ryan and the team, because it's to really hold your nerve to stage a conflict that has been, until now, primarily interpersonal, interfamily. "And then [to] finally, in one huge gesture, allow that conflict to unleash on the realm as a whole, I think is some very classy plotting."

Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood and set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon continues chronicling the bloody downfall of House Targaryen as family members slaughter one another in pursuit of absolute power.

Returning cast members for Season 3 include Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Steve Toussaint, Rhys Ifans, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, Matthew Needham, Tom Bennett, Kieran Bew, Kurt Egyiawan, Freddie Fox, Clinton Liberty, Gayle Rankin, and Abubakar Salim.

New additions to the cast include Tommy Flanagan as Lord Roderick Dustin, Dan Fogler as Ser Torrhen Manderly, and James Norton as Ormund Hightower.

House of the Dragon Season 3 premieres on HBO on June 21, and judging from the trailer alone, Westeros is about to drown in fire and blood once again.
