If you somehow missed it the first time around, The Evil Dead follows five college students who head out to a remote cabin in the woods and accidentally unleash something ancient, violent, and very eager to tear them apart piece by piece. This one is the least funny and most brutal film in the franchise; things got a bit slapstick in Evil Dead 2, and that was the whole point.

The film stars Bruce Campbell alongside Ellen Sandweiss, Richard DeManincor, Betsy Baker, and Theresa Tilly, all of whom spend most of the runtime being put through absolute hell.

Beyond just being a cult classic, The Evil Dead helped kick the doors open for independent horror in a way that still echoes today, spawning a franchise that refuses to stay buried more than four decades later. That legacy isn’t slowing down either, with Evil Dead Burn from Sébastien Vaniček set to hit theaters on July 10, and Evil Dead Wrath from Francis Galluppi currently slated for April 7, 2028.

Bottom line, if you’ve never experienced this one the way it was meant to be seen, or you just want to watch it rip your face off all over again, this release is the one to grab.
