In a very surprising turn of events, Vertigo Games has announced a remake of the full-motion video (FMV) game "The 7th Guest". Talk about a deep cut, old-school PC game. A cult favorite, the original "7th Guest" used FMV to weave a mysterious tale about a haunted mansion, an evil toymaker, and six guests who died in the mansion. As the player, you have to uncover the truth by solving puzzles and reliving ghostly memories, all while trying to uncover the titular seventh guest.

Most gamers nowadays aren’t too familiar with FMV games. Full-motion video was all the craze back in the early 1980s and into the 1990s. Games like Dragon’s Lair (1983), Night Trap (1993), and Phantasmagoria (1995) all used live-action footage and interactive movie elements as a way to make the games feel more realistic. The acting was cheesy, and most of the stories didn’t hold up, but they all had a B-movie charm to them, giving them a cult following. All of these original FMV games are currently available on Steam and have positive user reviews.

"The 7th Guest" remake will be built from the ground up using volumetric video, meaning all the live-action footage will be captured in 3D. Updated graphics and visuals blended with the live-action footage should allow for a more immersive experience. The puzzles will also be updated. They’re said to be woven into the lore and overall narrative, while still paying homage to the original game.
The original game was notorious for having some pretty violent death scenes. I’m definitely curious how this new game will handle or update those moments.

The game is slated to release sometime this year for all major consoles and PC. We’ll update ya’ll as we learn more.
