The Saturday Afternoon Slaughter

The Saturday Afternoon Slaughter

Trust me, I know. "Another horror film reviewer?" I get it. We're a dime-a-dozen. There's always some jabroni pushing his glasses up to the bridge of his nose who can spout an opinion, and in the grand scheme of Truly Disturbing’s sections, mine is sort of equated to the drive-thru "Dollar Menu". You can get “a burger” anywhere, right?

So, what do I bring to the table that others might not? As a dyed-in-the-wool horror fan pushing his mid-40s, I've been around the block a few times, and gained a certain appreciation for horror cinema that seems lost to newspaper critics and bomb-throwing bloggers who continue to run on the idea that this genre deserves continuous drubbing. Since I'm exclusively dealing in Home Video and/or Streaming, you'll be getting your reviews not with the immediacy of a freshly watched "opening weekend" opinion, but a review that reflects on the time it was released, with seasoned eyes and some hindsight. Maybe the movie was prophetic, and we wouldn't have known until now. Maybe it captured a forgotten theme or vibe we need to reclaim. Maybe I hated it as a kid and found something worthwhile now that made me reassess my opinion! Maybe nostalgia played a part in keeping my memory rosy, when upon reevaluation, it just doesn’t hold up nowadays.

Maybe we'll find out together.

You'll also get brutal honesty. No one at Truly Disturbing works from within anyone's pocket, nor are we interested in fitting in with what “the masses” are saying. If a movie sucks, it sucks. If it’s great, it's great. Anyone who's heard my rants on the 5195 Podcast knows I often stand on a wobbly fence of defending movies that everyone hates, and/or puzzled over a film's universal popularity when it personally didn’t grab me at all. Either way, you're going to get straight shooting from me, that's a promise.

I also operate under a simple TV Guide style rating system. None of this “7.75 out of 10”, Tomatometer percentage bullshit, it casts too wide a net. A movie's review should meet a succinct, at-a-glance criteria:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - It's amazing. Get off your ass and see it. Better yet, OWN it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Worth a look. Give it a go, and you won't be disappointed.

⭐️⭐️ - You've seen better. Forgettable at best.

⭐️ - I wasted my time, so you don't have to.

So, join me, won't you? I'll be sitting here every Saturday (with bonus retrospectives on key anniversary dates, and a few other surprises) with a new review for a film released ON THAT DAY (as best gleaned from research), to celebrate its anniversary. And I'm inviting you to grab a bite to eat, let the outside breeze relax you from an open window, and dive into yesteryear's favorite or forgotten gems. There's room on the couch, folks...

Excited for this! As someone who loves the 5195 podcast but is not a horror fan you make me interested in the genre. Your enthusiasm and passion for horror is contagious. While I’ll never watch some like Faces of Death, you’ve gotten me to try watching a few horror movies. Looking forward to the Saturday reviews.
