EC Comics has never been shy about holding a mirror up to society, and Cruel Universe #11 looks ready to continue that tradition with a story that blends classic science fiction and uncomfortable social commentary.
The latest issue of the hit sci-fi anthology features “One of the Good Ones,” a tale that explores prejudice, fear, and political manipulation through the lens of an alien civilization grappling with a growing human population.

Readers are introduced to the Condors, an advanced society that once welcomed human refugees from an overexploited Earth. As tensions rise, political leaders begin portraying humanity as a threat, citing crime, overcrowding, and unrest to justify increasingly harsh policies. What makes the story compelling is how quickly the rhetoric escalates. Humans are discussed as a problem rather than as individuals, while others challenge those assumptions with reason and compassion. The result feels less like distant science fiction and more like a reflection of real-world fears and divisions.
Veteran human advocate Ana Paez finds herself at the center of the conflict as a government eager to capitalize on public anxiety pushes increasingly extreme measures. The story appears poised to examine how prejudice often disguises itself as public safety and political necessity.

Visually, the issue looks fantastic.
The alien designs are expressive and distinctive, while the artwork balances world-building with strong character moments that make the setting feel both strange and familiar.
Like the classic EC stories that inspired it, Cruel Universe uses science fiction not just for spectacle but to explore very human flaws and fears. It’s the kind of storytelling that entertains while leaving readers with something to think about after the final page.
The issue also boasts an impressive lineup of covers, including the main cover by Albert Mercado, an archive edition by Matt Ward, a retro-inspired variant by Jorge Dominguez, and a fun homage cover by Monteys.
