We caught Monolord toward the tail end of 2019 in Los Angeles, and the band completely flattened the place. For only three guys, Monolord push an unbelievable amount of heavy riffage and command one hell of a live show. Tracks like “Last Leaf” sounded absolutely massive live, and honestly, just about everything off their last few albums (No Comfort was an absolute favorite of ours as well.) hit like a cement truck to the chest. So now that a brand new Monolord album is on the way, we’re definitely ready for it.
The Swedish doom trio just released another crushing preview of their upcoming album Neverending, which arrives May 29 through Relapse Records. The newest track, “It’s Neverending,” features guest vocals from Jörgen Sandström of Grave and formerly of Entombed, instantly turning the song into a death drenched doom monster.

Vocalist and guitarist Thomas Jäger explained:
“I did the growling on the demo, but it took me forever to record. It was more like to illustrate the idea. But Jörgen’s voice is so powerful, and his performance on the song is really great.”
Bassist Mika Häkki added:
“When we got the vocals finally in place, I remember I just burst into laughter. That was just my sincere reaction to how happy that end result made me. Jörgen must have opened some new portal of some kind with those screams!”
To create Neverending, Monolord traveled out to Ashland, Oregon to work with legendary producer and engineer Sylvia Massy, whose work includes artists like Tool, System of a Down, and Johnny Cash. According to Jäger:
“She asked me to send her everything we had, not just songs written for the album, but every stray riff and idea. I even sent her stuff I’d written ten years ago. She listened to all of it and sent us a list of what she wanted to work on.”

The band rehearsed 12 songs, recorded 11, and ultimately selected eight for Neverending.
Monolord first introduced the album with the release of “You Bastard,” which featured footage from the studio sessions with Massy.
If these singles are any indication, Neverending is shaping up to be another massive wall of smoke filled doom, oversized riffs, and soul crushing atmosphere from a band that already proved years ago they know exactly how to shake a room to its foundation.
