The case that refuses to stay buried has surfaced again in San Luis Obispo County.
The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office is actively executing a search warrant at the Arroyo Grande residence of Susan Flores, mother of convicted murderer Paul Flores, in connection to the disappearance and murder of Kristin Smart.
According to breaking information confirmed by Public Information Officer Tony Cipolla, Susan Flores was served on her doorstep at 7:05 a.m. and left the property shortly after, at approximately 8:02 a.m. Officials have confirmed the operation is directly tied to the ongoing Smart investigation. This was as of 11:18 am this morning, Pacific standard time.
For context, this is not uncharted territory.
The home has been touched by investigators before, but never quite like this. Back in March 2021, authorities used ground-penetrating radar at the nearby property of Ruben Flores, where a concealed 6 foot by 4 foot void beneath a deck later produced soil samples that tested positive for human blood. That discovery played a major role in the arrests of both Paul and Ruben Flores, with prosecutors arguing that Smart’s remains had been removed from the site sometime before the search.
HISTORY OF THE CASE
Paul Flores was convicted in 2022 for the first-degree murder of Kristin Smart, who disappeared in May 1996 while attending California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.

Prosecutors argued that Flores, who was the last person seen with Smart, assaulted her after a party and caused her death, then took steps to conceal what happened. While Smart’s body has never been found, evidence presented at trial included cadaver dog alerts, witness testimony placing Flores with Smart shortly before her disappearance, and long-standing circumstantial connections between Flores and attempts to hide or move remains. He was ultimately sentenced to 25 years to life in prison, while his father, Ruben Flores, was convicted of being an accessory after the fact for helping conceal and move Smart’s body.
Susan Flores’ home has its own long and unsettling history with investigators. It was last physically searched in June 2000, though at that time the yard itself was not excavated. A later sweep in February 2020 focused only on digital devices.
But the suspicion around the property stretches back even further.
In the spring of 1997, a tenant living at the home shortly after Smart’s disappearance reported finding a turquoise earring in the yard. The item was collected by law enforcement but was never formally entered into evidence, and records later indicated it was misplaced and never recovered.
That same tenant also described hearing a strange, consistent beeping sound from a digital watch coming from the backyard at around 4:20 a.m. daily, allegedly continuing until it abruptly stopped. The sound was believed to be coming from one of several freshly poured concrete planter boxes, though nothing was ever located.
After that, the tenant was evicted in March 1997, Susan Flores returned to the residence with her former coworker and partner Mike McConville, who remained there until his death on July 11, 2025. Susan Flores continues to reside at the property.
When Sheriff’s investigators spoke publicly in 2020, they stated they did not have sufficient new evidence to justify another search at the time, noting that prior efforts had already exhausted the property. That makes today’s operation especially significant, suggesting something new has prompted authorities to return.
At this stage, officials have not released what triggered the warrant. No evidence has been confirmed, and no details have been disclosed beyond the connection to the Smart case.
What is clear is this: nearly three decades after Kristin Smart vanished from California Polytechnic State University, investigators are still circling back to the same ground, still following threads that refuse to go cold, and still searching for the one thing that has never been recovered.

As of now, this remains a developing story, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
