Top 5 Best/Worst of 2011 (Kristians list)

Hello fiends and welcome to our top 5 best/worst list of genre related films for 2011. Ahh the year went by so fast and with your help you have made Truly Disturbing a household name(we hope). At any rate our staff has picked their favorite flicks and worst stinkers for 2011. Below is Kristian J. Hanson(AKA Craptatsicwriter) list, enjoy!

BEST 5

1. Insidious- A film I went into blind for my Birthday in Chicago with my then Fiancee. Just an awesome film with a creepy build up and tone, leading to an ending that was both awesome and scary. For a shoe string budget, this movie delivered the goods as Lin Shaye shined along with the rest of the cast.

2. Chillerama- A film of 4 movies put together by some of my favorite horror directors. I got to see this at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery and the film was hilarious and gross where it needed to be and was just an all around fun time. Performances from Joel David Moore, Kane Hodder, Anton Troy, Adam Rifkin (starring and Directing) this movie is such a fun midnight movie, that should be enjoyed with some popcorn and blue butter that will cause you to turn into a body raping zombie from the Drive-In!

3. Final Destination 5- The opening credits should make this a hit from the beginning, but the onslaught of death and destruction make this movie stand out as a must see especially with the amazing and shocking ending. If you want eye popping gore, crazy death and a fun twist, this is definitely a movie for you. Especially since they brought back Mr. Tony Todd. Watch in 3D, but be prepared for flying flesh and blood and possibly glass, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

4. Dead Hooker In a Trunk- A film made on a shoe string budget by a couple of twins and horror fiends, this is a movie that you need to watch a couple times to make sure you see everything that is added. It is a fun film to watch with friends as the group goes on a trek trying to dispose of a Dead Hooker they found in their trunk. As they do this, they come across drug dealers, a puking Goody Two Shoes and possibly love for two of the stars. Oh, and an amputation of an arm. Twisted good time!

5.The Human Centipede 2- A movie filled with a demented little man who dreams of creating his OWN human centipede. We get to see his fantasy come to life as he slowly kidnaps his victims as nobody seems to notice. The film is shot in Black and White and makes for an amazing mood and feeling, especially when he begins to create his very own, Human Centipede. Tom Six was told that he didn’t push the envelope enough, so he came out with this version and I truly did enjoy it. It wasn’t as bad as everyone made it out to be when I was given a barf bag and staple remover at the midnight screening in Hollywood. I will be renting the Blu-Ray so I can see the uncut version since two of the worst scenes were deleted, even at the screening.

WORST 5

1. DeadTime Stories Vol. 1- I love George A. Romero, but I couldn’t even watch all of this movie. It was so bad that it wasn’t even worth fast forwarding to the end to see what exactly would happen. The only entertaining part of this film was Mr. Romero’s appearance in the very beginning.

2. The Howling:Reborn- I am a huge fan of the HOWLING original film, but this one is so far off the mark I wanted to shake a chupacabra. I anticipated this film and I watched it as soon as I got it in the mail, and what I witnessed was horrible and a bastardization of the franchise like all of the following sequels have been since Joe Dante’s. This is a film that deserves to be thrown away and burned because it is not THE HOWLING, it is a blatant rip off of Twilight but nixing the Vampires. The only part I can give any credit to this film is when the Werewolf is actually a costume instead of CGI. It looked awesome there, but it was only for a minute and definitely not worth the rest of the 89 minutes I had to endure as I watched another crappy Werewolf film that should never have been named THE HOWLING.

3. Red Riding Hood- Personally I love the story of Red Riding Hood, but seeing that it had the feel of Twilight, I went in kind of skeptical, and unfortunately that was a good thing. The film is long and drawn out and honestly, there wasn’t one appealing part of the film as it dragged on and I finished it by fast forwarding to the end to see just what happened, and alas, even that was sadly a waste of my time.

4. Apollo 18- I am not one to say I hate the found footage films, so I gave this film a chance. I sat in the theater with about ten other people and waited for it to pick up and get exciting, but it didn’t. When the movie ended I just got up and left as I tried to count how many times I yawned throughout the film. Again, I try not to be too harsh on films, but this one just wasn’t what I was expecting.

5. Fright Night 3D- I went into this movie with an open mind. Honestly, if the film would have been given a different title and the names would have been changed, I would have enjoyed it a lot more. However, I didn’t like the Brewster character, and David Tennant was my favorite cast member even though Colin Farrell did a nice job of changing the main Vampire Character, it just fell flat to me and I left the theater just wondering why?
