Remember back in 2012 when NBC tried (and failed) to reboot The Munsters but all we got was an hour long mini-movie? Well, they want another STAB at it and we have the details below.
Per Deadline, “Odd Mom Out” creator, executive producer, and star Jill Kargman is teaming with talk show host Seth Meyers to develop a half-hour, single-camera version of “The Munsters.” It will follow members of the offbeat family as they try to stay true to themselves and struggle to fit in… in hipster Brooklyn of all places. Oy!
Kargman will write the script and executive produce with Meyers and Mike Shoemaker of Sethmaker Shoemeyers Productions. Universal TV is the studio.
The network’s previous reboot attempt was an hourlong pilot written by Bryan Fuller and directed by Bryan Singer that starred Jerry O’Connell as Herman Munster, Portia de Rossi as Lily, Eddie Izzard as Grandpa, and Charity Wakefield as cousin Marilyn. It fell more on the “dark” side of the fence rather than comedy like the original, and that may have been its downfall.
As NBC chief Bob Greenblatt said back in January of 2013, “…we tried to make it not just a sitcom. We tried to make it an hour, which ultimately has more dramatic weight than a half-hour. It’s hard to calibrate how much weirdness vs. supernatural vs. family story. I just think we didn’t get the mix right.”
