The console war will begin in November 2013. While Nintendo’s Wii U has been hanging around for some time, it’s held back many releases in order to compete with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One when they finally release. Eight years have passed since the last console war, so gamers are sitting on the edges of their seats in anticipation, wondering how the next generation will transform console gaming. Although the hardware is impressive across the board, what everyone is really interested in is whether any of the games are worth it. Here are the most exciting upcoming exclusives and releases with the latest console generation.
Killzone: Shadow Fall
Killzone: Shadow Fall for the PS4 is a dark, impressive first-person shooter that is the latest edition of the series. You’re in a futuristic world, fighting off aliens with the help of a combat drone. This drone takes advantage of the PS4 controller touchpad, turning it from gimmick to useful feature.
The Battlefield series has long been a staple across all platforms, and the next gen version is sure to push the early limits on the hardware. Battlefield 4 brings back the game play every gamer knows and loves, along with new features — such as the dynamic battlefield addition, Levolution — that improve the replay value of multiplayer. The graphics are pristine, of course, and look more and more like computer-level graphics. Battlefield 4 will come to both next gen consoles, as well as the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
Ryse: Son of Rome
Ryse: Son of Rome is an original IP from the Far Cry and Crysis team. It takes you to ancient Rome, putting you in the shoes of Ryse. He starts off as a simple soldier but soon finds himself a general. You lead battles, have a great sword combat system and experience a story that looks promising — exclusively on the Xbox One.
Dead Rising 3
Dead Rising 3 comes onto the scene with much anticipation. This zombie game has always received a great deal of interest and acclaim, as the open world game play and sheer amount of unexpected weaponry make it a fun time every play through. You also get a compelling story that takes you back into this zombified world. The characters are great and the graphics are top-notch. This Xbox One game is sure to be a day one purchase.
Should You Be an Early Adopter?
The launch titles for the three next-gen consoles are exciting, but it’s going to take some time for third-party developers to become used to the systems and build up steam. Kotaku recommends waiting for a few months for the game library to expand, unless you can strategically happen upon some excellent holiday sales. Price drops also happen after the initial purchase rush dies down, and the console companies settle in for long-term sales instead of the first burst.
