Halloween Fun: Top-10 Over-The-Top Horror Films

KillerKlowns1 Halloween Fun: Top 10 Over The Top Horror Films

Halloween is almost here, and for movie buffs, that means it’s time to break out the scary movies, hunker down in the basement, and turn out the lights. And really, nothing beats breaking out one of the classic, over-the-top scary movies that are great to watch every year. Of course, they’re usually good for a laugh as much as a scare, but that’s half the point! So here are our picks for the 10 most hilariously over-the-top scary movies to revisit this Halloween season.

10. Jennifer’s Body (2009)

Directed by Diablo Cody – the one who made “Juno” – this film is utterly ridiculous. It’s a creepy, off-putting, oddly engaging, and ultimately amusing take on an angry high school cheerleader’s vendetta on the male gender.

9. FeardotCom (2002)

From title, to premise, to execution, this film is absolutely horrendous – which of course makes it great fun to watch a 2nd or 3rd time with friends.

8. Zombieland (2009)

This one is meant largely as a comedy, but it actually has some legitimate horror elements, and amounts to an enjoyable, over-the-top “scary movie.”

7. Sleepy Hollow (1999)

Sleepy Hollow is a classic tale, and a favorite scary saga for many, but if you haven’t seen this adaptation you’re missing out. Picture Box Films – an online streaming service that rotates its selection every month as decided by a panel of film experts – is actually showing it for the Halloween season, so now’s a good time to catch it. Why is it over-the-top? Well, it’s directed by Tim Burton and stars Johnny Depp as Ichabod Crane, so use your imagination!

6. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

It’s unique, and certainly not for everybody, but almost as terrifying in its sheer weirdness as in its actual elements of horror. This one’s worth a watch if you’ve never tried it before.

5. Pirahna 3D (2010)

It’s exactly what it sounds like – and it’s just as goofy, gory and terrifying as it sounds.

4. Fright Night (2011)

This re-make featuring Colin Farrell as the neighborhood vampire was actually a blast. It’s fairly light and goofy, but has its scary moments, and walks a line between spoof and serious.

3. Jason X (2001)

This one’s tough to explain if you haven’t seen it. Basically, it’s a super villain amassing an absurd kill count in completely ridiculous fashion. It’s too silly to really be scary, but it’s a blast as an over-the-top horror concept.

2. The Shining (1980)

This may be blasphemous, as “The Shining” is a horror classic. And sure, the first time you see it it scares you out of your mind. But once you know what’s coming, Jack Nicholson’s performance suddenly seems hilariously over-the-top.

1. Killer Klowns From Outer Space (1988)

In all seriousness, watch this film. It’s a shabbily made, ridiculous horror carnival, and it’s somehow a blast. Fun fact: this film cost $2 million to make, and grossed over $40 million worldwide!
