Two people have been charged after a teenage boy accused of rape and murder was buried alive in Bolivia.
Casiano Sandi and Felicia Vargas, members of an indigenous community in the South American country’s highlands, have been charged with murder, inciting a mob and criminal association after 17-year-old Santos Ramos was buried alive with his alleged victim, the Associated Press reports.
Around 200 angry members of a Quechua community in the district of Colquechaca accused Ramos of the rape and murder of 35-year-old Leandra Arias Janco last weekend.
The mob seized Ramos, bound his hands and feet and threw him into the victim’s grave next to her coffin during her funeral on Wednesday night.
In 2009 Bolivia’s constitution recognised indigenous justice and allowed local community leaders to hand out justice for minor crimes, but not things as serious as rape or murder.
