Was this really a surprise? This has been one of the most hyped horror remakes I’ve ever seen. And now it’s claimed another victim; the box office. Read on for the details.
The Evil Dead
remake is the number one movie in America. The film, directed by Fede Alvarez and produced by the original Evil Dead trilogy’s team – Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell and Rob Tapert – began early screenings at 10pm Thursday night.
On opening night, the film took in $11.9 million. It’s cumulative weekend gross was $26 million, putting that at the top of the box office chart, beating Jurassic Park 3D which grossed an estimated $18.2 million.
Evil Dead‘s weekend performance beat out the original trilogy’s cumulative gross at the box office (naturally – thank you very much inflation)
Jurassic Park 3D, it should be noted, out-performed Titanic 3D‘s weekend gross by a million. I think people are ready for more dinosaurs on the big screen again…
As for the Evil Dead, the film’s opening weekend success certainly helps Alvarez’s effort to get a sequel going. The director revealed at SXSW that a script was already in the works.
