Video Games: GEARS OF WAR: JUDGEMENT and HALO 4 DLC released, FREE!

The new Map Packs were released on Xbox 360 completely free on March 29th. Read on for details…

With downloadable content released in abundance, and most utterly useless and costing far too much, it’s refreshing to see developers and publishers give back to the game community. Way back when, mostly on PC, developers would dish out free DLC all the time. It was something to keep you interested in their game, far past its lifespan. I’m not quite sure where it all went wrong. Gun camouflage, for five bucks? You know what games I’m talking about. Alternate skins are the worst. Give me additional campaign missions, then I fork over the cash.

The new GEARS OF WAR: JUDGMENT DLC, titled HAVEN DLC PACK, consists of one new map, “HAVEN,” and one new mode, “Execution.” It also includes a compatibility update for online matchmaking. The weight comes in at 50.12 MB hard drive space, not too much at all. The new mode adds something that was missing from the multiplayer in the first place, executions. You know, like beating your opponent senseless with his own removed arm until his head caves in? One tends to wonder if it was ‘missing’ purposefully as the previous three games reveled gloriously with it. Also it’s brought to us by MAXIM! Magazine of all things. I don’t LOL on the written page, but this may deserve it.

Also coming to us free, FORGE ISLAND, for HALO 4, a brand new map for Forge Mode. It’s boasted as being the biggest Forge map HALO has ever seen. In addition to the map, we get a whole new set of tools and countless buildable objects, corners, platforms, etc. It begins with three islands, small, medium and large, then the choice is only yours. Do whatever you wish. The latter comes with enough space to build multiple-tiered warehouses, complexes of your own design. You can bet someone has already built Blood Gulch, maybe an extended version to the likes we’ve never seen. It clocks at 154.84 MB hard drive space.

The description reads: “Referred to as the ‘Great Anvils’ by UNSC personnel deployed to the southwestern peninsula of Requiem’s smallest continent, these massive sentinels tower high above the shield world’s warm tropical ocean. The geologic data acquired form these islands has offered incredible fodder for Infinity Science’s Forge group, providing diverse and modifiable terrain for the War Games combat simulations.”

I like seeing free DLC again, especially since it’s an endangered species these days. Email your local developer and tell them you love it too.
