A pair of eyeballs in a medical box ended up in a trash can at a gas station, police said today. A worker at a Conoco station in Kansas City, Missouri called police after finding the cardboard box late on Wednesday. The box was labeled, ‘Keep refrigerated’.
Surveillance video shows two men in a blue Toyota arriving on the garage forecourt before a dark-haired man in a cream sweater carries a white box from the car and leaves it in the trash.
Police say no eye banks or hospitals in the area were awaiting delivery of any eyeballs.
The Jackson County Medical Examiner’s office is holding the package while the investigation continues.
According to the Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation, more than one million people in the U.S. need cornea transplants each year.
