TV Review – A HAUNTING “The Allen House”

What happens when two skeptics move into a haunted house?  Read on to find out friendos!

When the episode started the title was “House of Horrors” but the TV Guide said “The Allen House” I agreed with the Guide, now let’s see if you do.  Welcome to Monticello, Arkansas.  Which could be the home of Professor Mark Spencer, wife Rebecca and their kids if Mark accepts the Dean position at the local university.  Mark and Rebecca seem to be drawn to the town, and as they look for a house Rebecca is drawn to a certain house.  Mark is turned off because it looks dilapidated, but to please his wife he rings the bell.  He hears something creepy coming from the radio and is relieved when no one answers the door.

Rebecca is still adamant that this will be their house so the go to a realtor.  The place is called the Allen house and the realtor tells them it’s haunted.  She refuses to help them get in touch with the owner.  How rude.  No commission for her.  Mark checks the internet and finds that Allen house has a fifty year history of paranormal activity.  A few days later the owner calls Mark and they head over and enter Allen house for the first time.  Once inside Mark begins to feel better about it.  The owner says that it’s haunted, which they don’t believe, and that the house was exorcised.  She also feels that some force sent Mark and Rebecca there because they were meant to own it.

As soon as they move in their doorbell is constantly being rang by curious locals who want to take a look inside.  Rebecca says no way.  While renovating Mark is continually drawn to the attic.  He is both mystified and fearful of it.  While there he feels a presence and sees what he thinks is his shadow on the wall.  Problem is that when he moves the shadow doesn’t.

With all the renovations the family is quickly headed for Bankrupt Land.  Since Halloween is coming up Rebecca has the idea that I would have suggested in the first place.  Let the freaks in and charge five bucks a head!  Six hundred people show up!  Some college students lead tours of the house.  One student tells the tale of the woman who haunts the house.  Her name was Ladelle and she committed suicide in the master bedroom.  While in the room the lights start flickering, then the wardrobe opens and a shirt flies out and lands on an older lady’s head.  The other sight seers check the closet to see if it was a set up and they find nothing.  As the older woman leaves she is ecstatic to tell Mark that she is positive that she saw Ladelle’s ghost.

“I paid five bucks to see a shirt fly out of a closet?! Lame!”

After an incident where a record starts playing and Rebecca goes over to put the needle down and it stops, a reluctant Mark calls a team of paranormal investigators from Louisiana.  One of the investigators, Bess, immediately feels the history and spirit of the house.  The Spencer children are sent to friends houses and Mark and Rebecca decide to have a date night.  As they are leaving they have a strong urge to stay there because she fears for the investigators.  Bess is drawn to the attic of course, and while there she hears a voice whisper, “Ladelle”.  Another member is in the master bedroom when she hears a woman singing softly.  Then she sees lighting engulf the house and the power goes out.  The only thing left working are the EVP recorders.  They assume it’s a power outage but as they look at the other houses they see they are the only ones.

The next day Bess returns and lets them listen to the EVPs.  The voices on the tape seem to be responding to the investigators in real time.  Bess has never heard anything like it before, as she usually deals with residual hauntings.  She tells them, “The spirit wants something from us”.  One Saturday morning Mark wakes up and feels pulled toward the attic.  While he looks around wondering what the hell he’s doing up there he sees a small opening in the wall.  He pulls the wooden board back and finds a large manila envelope filled with letters.

If you want to know what was in the envelope you’ll have to watch!

Damn that was a let down of a show.  Boring as hell and calling it House of Horrors?  I don’t think so, more like House of Dead Letters.  I do love how they charged people to come into their house.  I think I’ll try that to get some spending money for Christmas!  Hopefully next week will be creepier.  Let me know what you thought.  You can catch new episodes of A HAUNTING Friday nights on Destination America.  Thanks for reading!

me too! I even emailed the producers, channel, etc and they claimed they didn’t know what music is played in their episodes (basically “sorry, it’s not my department.”).
