The decomposing maggot-ridden body of a dead woman has been found at her Denver home.
Police officers made the grisly discovery on October 1 after being called to 32-year-old Michaela Beth Ford’s apartment by neighbours complaining of a foul smell.
Her corpse lay on the couch, guarded by her Great Dane, Lola, her apparently drunken husband sitting nearby.
Asked how long she had been dead for, husband Steven Ford told officers: ‘She’s not dead, she’s fine,’ despite her being in an obvious state of decomposition.
They believe her death occurred more than 10 days earlier, based on the gruesome state of her body thedenverchannel.com reported.
A maintenance manager said he had seen Mr Ford coming and going during the course of the past two weeks, often to the liquor store, but had not seen his wife at any point.
When officers spoke to the husband he appeared drunk, they said, or ‘out of sorts’ as he sat slumped in a chair blocking the doorway to the living room where Mrs Ford lay on a couch.
Neighbours said the couple were known to have had ‘numerous domestic violence incidents.
On one occasion the maintenance manager had spotted splattered blood on a wall outside their apartment and insisted that Mr Ford clean it up.
Within the apartment there was dried blood on the floor and an over-turned television set in the bedroom as well as a large hole in the drywall of the living room.
As the investigation continues it is not clear what led to Mrs Fords death and her husband has not been charged with anything.
