This story is bound to send chills down the spine of even the toughest person. Read on for the details.
A 16-year-old girl in the US has gone missing moments after tweeting that there was someone in her house, sparking a massive social media effort to find her.
Kara Alongi, from Clark, New Jersey, sent the tweet at 6pm on Sunday night local time (about 8am this morning AEST) and has not been seen since.
“There is someone in my hour ecall 911,” the tweet read (the spelling has not been corrected).
Ms Alongi had been home alone at the time because her family had left to watch her younger brother participating in a sporting match, the Springfield Patch website reports.
In the hours since her disappearance the hashtag #helpfindkara has become a trending topic on Twitter.
Ms Alongi’s family and friends are camped outside her home while police and dogs search the area.
Police are at this stage unsure whether she is actually in danger.
“We still don’t know whether she ran away or if there was any foul play,” Clark Police Chief Alan Scherb said.
“There are no obvious signs of a break-in and the home was not ransacked.
“The door was open. Kara, if you see this, please contact your parents or Clark Police. You will not be in trouble. We are concerned for your safety.”
