Sure, there are plenty of reality competition shows out there. But none of them like this gem, which pits Special Effects peeps against one another for some pretty awesome prizes.
If you’re a horror nut like me, than you will love this show. We have twelve contestants all vying for the top spot. The winner’s grand prizes include the opportunity to become a guest lecturer at the MAKE UP FOR EVER ACADEMY in New York and Paris, the 2012 Toyota Camry hybrid, and $100,000!
Let’s meet our esteemed judges! First we have three-time Academy Award Winner Ve Neill (PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS), Glenn Hetrick (BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, HEROES, THE X-FILES) and replacing Patrick Tatopoulos (UNDERWORLD, INDEPENDENCE DAY, RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION) is Neville Page (AVATAR, PROMETHEUS). Our lovely host is actress McKenzie Westmore, whose father is acclaimed makeup artist Michael Westmore.
Each episode features the contestants showing off skills like prosthetics, 3-D design, sculpting, casting, molding and painting. The contestants usually have 3 days to complete their designs. Sometimes working in teams of two, which leads to more drama. For example in the first episode of the third season a young contestant had just finished sculpting a face piece, when his partner, who disliked what he was doing, completely flattened the design with his hand. What a bastard! On last Tuesday’s episode a girl that is sculpting slices her finger open and has to leave her partner behind to get seven stitches. Art is pain people!
What I think is so fascinating about this show, besides drama, is how they sculpt and cast things so fast and I’m left thinking “What the hell are they going to do to that?” Most times it ends up coming out wonderfully, and if it doesn’t the Simon Cowell of FACE OFF Glenn Hetrick will sure as hell let them know about it. So far this season we’ve had the following themes. Episode one was to create an alien that could fit in to the classic cantina scene in STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE. The second was to create a pirate using something relating to the sea and pirates such as sea urchins, barnacles, and daggers. The third episode the contestants had to build their own interpretations of Chinese dragons and each team had to use their Chinese Zodiac sign to incorporate into their designs.
If that’s not tantalizing enough, here are some of the best looks from the first three episodes. Be sure to watch FACE OFF on Syfy Tuesday night, where the challenge is called “Alice in Zombieland” and Paul WS Anderson is the guest judge! Let me know what you think of the show friendos!
