A man who admitted hitting a woman with a frying pan and strangling her before stuffing her body in a suitcase and abandoning it on the street has been jailed for 20 years.
Hassan Malik, 57, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Betty Williams, 28, whose body was found in the suitcase left among trash on a sidewalk in New York City, U.S., three days before Christmas in 2010.
Malik, from East Harlem, who was on probation due to an unrelated attempted robbery case at the time of the killing, apologised to the victim’s family as he was sentenced in Manhattan’s State Supreme Court.
The woman had been staying with Mr Malik in his apartment on Pleasant Avenue when she was killed, according to a report in the New York Times.
He told officers she grabbed the electrical cord from his VCR machine and wound it around his neck, but he fought back and eventually choked her.
Malik stuffed her fully clothed body into a suitcase, which he then wheeled up First Avenue and down 114th Street, where he abandoned it next to some garbage cans.
Miss William’s body was discovered by a neighbourhood resident who opened the suitcase on December 22 2010.
The 57-year-old was captured in CCTV footage of the street, which showed him wheeling the case containing Miss William’s body down the sidewalk.
Malik was sentenced to 20 years in prison by Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Charles Solomon on Tuesday.
